About this rug

A large lobed medallion worked in navy, deep red and pink makes this a wonderful rug. The field looks cream from a distance, but up close it is a dense lattice of brown diamonds holding small red rosettes. A large lobed medallion anchors the middle, worked in navy, deep red and pink with pointed pendants at the top and bottom. Gorgeous navy spandrels occupy each corner, with graceful curling vines and red blossoms. The wide outer band is navy, carrying cream palmettes and red flowers linked by a scrolling vine. A narrow guard stripe of deep red set with small blue motifs frames the field. The pile is full across the face, and the red and blue read clearly. The brown lattice warms the cool navy frame across the face of the rug. At 5' by 9'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Songhor rugs

Songhor lies in Kermanshah province in western Persia, Kurdish weaving country. Around the year 1000 the Kermanshah region was ruled by a Kurdish dynasty, the Hasanwayhids. Older Kurdish rugs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, among them garden carpets and the harshang design, are known for their exuberant colors. Songhor rugs are geometric, with strong madder reds and deep blues. This rug keeps the strong reds and deep blues, with the red in the medallion and the blue in the frame. Unlike the strict geometry seen in many Songhor rugs, curving vines and palmettes soften the border around the tight lattice of the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
