About this rug

A strict grid of octagonal figures fills the green field of this amazing rug. Over a green field, rows of octagonal figures in deep red and black alternate with smaller diamond shapes. Thin red lines connect the figures across the green ground, creating a strict grid that fills the space from top to bottom. The gorgeous main border is deep red, carrying a repeat of small geometric forms in black and cream. Narrow guard stripes in red and green frame the field on every side. The pile is full over the face and in the borders. The green ground keeps the red drawing from weighing down a narrow passage. At 2'4" by 4'9", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

A main carpet was the most important and expensive weaving of every Turkmen tribe, and the main floor covering of the tent. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid of octagons and diamonds, set hard against the green ground. The deep red of the motifs stands out clearly against the green field, and the deep red border frames the whole composition.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
