A large lobed medallion stands in the sage green panel of this lovely rug. The sage green field forms a long scalloped panel, holding a large lobed medallion outlined in dusty rose and faded red. This central figure stretches down the middle with charming scrolling vines and small floral motifs in the open space around it. A pale gray cream ground surrounds the panel, carrying dainty curling vine scrolls at the corners. A wide gray cream border runs a continuous vine of rosettes and leaves in muted brown and rose. Narrow guard stripes with small geometric repeats frame it on both sides. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The green and rose tones sit lightly together across the surface. At 5'6" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
Kula carpets, from Manisa province, are studied in two periods: the “palace carpet” period from the 17th century to the 1860s, and the years after, when foreign influence shows. Almost every household in Demirci, a district of Manisa, has been known to keep a carpet loom. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This piece holds that blend in a bold central shape within a flowing floral border. Sage, cream and dusty rose give it a faded warmth. Manisa pieces were made for houses rather than for export, so the drawing is unfussy.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
