Charming floral sprays in faded red, chestnut and sage green sit within a cream field. Set within a cream field, large floral sprays in faded red, chestnut and sage green surround a central cluster of palmettes. A central cluster of graceful scrolling vines and rosettes, flowers seen from above, anchors the field rather than an enclosed medallion. Floral sprays fill the four corners and the sides of the field, matching the central drawing. The main border is a narrow band in faded burgundy, carrying small sage and cream blossoms, framed by thin guard stripes of geometric checks. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile is low across the cream field. It looks like a garden plot, the soft greens cooling the warm reds against the pale ground. At 6'9" by 10'6", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
An Ottoman report of 1917 notes that carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly floral layout, with the symmetrical sprays arranged clearly around the center. The muted rose and sage against the cream ground follow that softer palette.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
