About this rug

An elongated diamond medallion rests on the cream ground of this charming rug. A cream field holds a central medallion and scattered floral sprays in gray beige and dark brown. A gorgeous elongated diamond medallion sits at the center, its core a small rosette ringed by curling vines. Dainty floral sprays fill the corners and echo the center. The main border is dark brown, dotted with small cream flower heads. The pile is low in places across the field, and the foundation shows through in a few patches. Brown and cream tones meet across the surface of this rug. At 5'7" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The carpets of Isparta, known as “Isparta quality,” were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey. Its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. The dark brown border frames the lighter interior of this rug and holds the scattered floral drawing in place.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
