Scrolling vines and flower heads make this a charming rug. Scrolling vines and flower heads cover the tan field in brown and tan lines. A beautiful oval medallion holds a small blossom at its heart, with pendants extending toward each end. Lovely loose floral sprays curve along the field edge and frame the open center. The main border runs dark gray brown, carrying a dense repeat of small cream blossoms and leaves. A light antique wash dulled the colors and spared the drawing. Wear appears as low pile in a few spots over the rug. The brown drawing rests plainly against the pale ground. At 5'7" by 9'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The carpets of Isparta, known as “Isparta quality,” were famous in the early years of the Turkish Republic. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly. This rug keeps that order, with the floral motifs set clearly against the light ground. The brown lines stay gentle and the whole piece is easy to live with.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
