A dark brown lobed diamond medallion sits at the heart of this lovely rug. The cream field forms a scalloped panel, carrying a dense scatter of graceful tan vines and feathery leaves that branch out from the center. A beautiful dark brown medallion sits at the heart, shaped as a lobed diamond with a small tan core and notched pendants at the top and bottom. Brown boteh forms, the paisley leaf-drop, mark the points where the panel meets the frame. The main border and corner ground run deep brown, filled with tan rosettes and small blossoms in a tight repeat. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. In a corner, the brown and tan stay close in tone. At 5'4" by 8'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug holds that orderly drawing, with vines branching from the central form. The wash has taken the colors to a single warm level, leaving the brown and cream near each other in shade.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
