An all-over repeat of small blossoms and curling vines runs across this charming rug. Over a gray brown field, a dense scatter of small blossoms and curling vines repeats in brown and pale gray. No central medallion gathers the pattern, which runs as an all-over repeat from edge to edge. The field reaches the corners without distinct spandrel pieces to break the drawing. A few patches of low pile show pale foundation across the face. A full antique wash has left no color at strength. The brown and gray tones stay muted against the floor. At 5' by 9'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly floral drawing, with small blossoms scattered evenly across the ground. The washed brown and gray sit at one level, holding the pattern clear without strong contrast.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
