About this rug

A lobed medallion stands on a gray beige field in this lovely rug. At the center, a lobed medallion sits on a gray beige field scattered with small floral sprays and vines in smoke gray and dark brown. The medallion holds a small rosette within its outline, framed by charming curling leaves that reach toward the corners. Scrolling vines curve along the ends and edges, in the same dark brown. The antique wash was full, and the pattern stays distinct. The pile has thinned in a few patches across the face, and the weave shows in pale spots. Small sprays, leaves and rosettes fill the ground between the larger forms. Smoke gray and brown tones stay muted across the washed pattern. At 4'10" by 8'8", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece keeps that orderly layout, with a defined central shape and corner forms set on a pale ground. The gray beige and smoke gray tones stay muted, so the drawing reads from across the room.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
