About this rug

Lovely scrolling vines and small rosettes repeat in an all-over plan. Set within a pale pinkish gray beige field, graceful scrolling vines and small rosettes repeat in an all-over plan with no central medallion. Soft brown, smoke gray and pale blue make up the drawing. A wide gray green border carries pretty cream flowers and tiny leaves, with narrow brown bands inside and outside it. Washing has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. The pile is worn low across the field and the border, and the foundation shows across large areas. The soft brown and gray notes hold back in a bright room. At 5'7" by 9'1", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. Carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages since 1850, and its carpets first reached buyers overseas through the Oriental Carpet Company. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. The flower scrolls are tidy and calm. It leaves the deep madder of Persia aside, resting in gray beige, smoke and soft brown.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
