This lovely rug has a tall diamond medallion filled with brown rosettes. Pale green covers the field, washed over with a faint lattice of charming curling vines and small leaves in pale blue and smoke gray. A tall diamond medallion sits at the center, filled with pretty brown rosettes and pale blue blossoms. Dense floral clusters in soft brown and gray beige gather at the corners and sides, echoing the medallion. A broad border of blossoms in dark brown and gray beige surrounds the field. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile lies low and even over the face. The soft green and brown rest against the pale ground. At 5'5" by 9'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The state-owned Sumerbank took over the Isparta carpet factory in 1943 and backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. In this rug the chalky softness holds, with the green and brown faded to a light haze against the pale ground. The medallion and the corner clusters sit in the balanced symmetry of a town workshop.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
