About this rug

Gray brown floral sprays and scrolling vines fill this lovely rug. Pretty gray brown floral sprays and scrolling vines repeat over an ivory field. There is no central medallion, only rows of small rosettes and palmettes spaced through the open ground. The main border runs gray brown with a continuous vine scroll, framed by narrow guard stripes in gray beige. The wash is full and antique, with no color left at strength. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows through in patches across the face. The dense drawing in gray brown and gray beige keeps the ivory ground from reading blank. At 6' by 9'8", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream than the deep madder of Persia. Because these are town rugs, the drawing stays orderly and the field looks even from a distance. This rug keeps that orderly floral repeat and the soft, washed palette. Gray brown motifs rest against the ivory ground, while the border vine mirrors the field sprays.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
