A lobed medallion in blue and navy fills the middle of this delightful rug. The muted pink field holds a scatter of pretty cream blossoms and teal leaves on thin brown vines. A lobed medallion fills the middle, worked in blue and navy with a cream core. Cream corner pieces hold lovely curling floral sprays that echo the field. The main border is lavender, carrying a row of cream rosettes and small geometric motifs. A light wash has softened the colors, and the drawing stays clear. It anchors a sitting area, and the cool lavender border balances the warm pink ground. At 5'5" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 1997 its hand-woven carpets have carried a protected geographical mark. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece shows a formal central medallion and cream corner pieces set against a field of loose floral vines. The pink ground and lavender border read soft rather than bright. The drawing stays unfussy, suited to a house rather than a showroom.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
