About this rug

An all-over repeat of vines and flower heads fills this lovely rug. On a cream field, an all-over repeat of delicate vines and flower heads in gray brown fills the space with no central medallion. Small leaves and blossoms drift through the open ground among the bigger floral forms. Pale blue forms the main border, with a chain of pretty cream rosettes and small blossoms. A narrow stripe in dark brown runs just inside the border. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. The pile is full. The dense drawing suits a corner, where the brown and blue tones rest easy against the pale ground. At 5'2" by 9'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. This rug holds that chalky look, with gray brown and soft blue resting on a broad cream base. The drawing carries its floral forms across the whole field in a steady repeat.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
