Scrolling vines and small rosettes repeat in a dense lattice on this lovely rug. Across an ivory field, graceful scrolling vines and small rosettes repeat in a dense lattice of dusty rose and gray brown. The design is an all-over pattern with no central medallion, so the floral drawing runs evenly from end to end. A wide gray brown border frames the field, carrying a small lattice of rosettes in cream and rose. Low patches show in a few spots on the face. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. The tight pattern holds the rose and gray notes close against the ivory ground. At 5'1" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. A single agency in Isparta had about 25,294 square meters of carpet woven in homes in the first half of 1911, the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field looks even. This rug repeats its vines evenly across the ivory ground. The gray brown border holds the pale field in a steady frame.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
