Gray beige vines, leaves and small rosettes repeat across this lovely rug. The ivory field holds an all-over repeat of gray beige vines, leaves and small rosettes, with no central medallion. The beautiful main border runs gray brown, carrying a fine repeat of vines and blossoms that frames the busy center. Narrow brown stripes edge this border on both sides. A few patches have worn low, with pale patches where the weave shows. The full antique wash left no color at strength. It suits a bright room, letting the gray and cream notes keep the space open. At 5'2" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. In 1943 the Isparta carpet factory passed to the state-owned Sumerbank, which backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. On this piece the repeat covers the whole ground without a break. A gray brown border runs around the repeat.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
