A lobed medallion filled with pale blue rosettes sits on the ivory field of this charming rug. Over an ivory field, graceful curling vines and small blossoms in gray brown and pale blue drift around a central shape. A lobed medallion sits at the center, its core filled with pale blue rosettes and fine lattice work. Large vine loops in the corners curve inward to frame the open space. A splendid slate blue main border carries a scroll of flowers and leaves. Thin bands of tiny geometric marks run along both edges of the border. The pile is low in places along the border. The soft blue and brown notes rest side by side. At 5'4" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
By 1909 the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet export company of the day, had workshops in five places, and Isparta was one of them. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing. This rug has that orderly drawing around a lobed center. The pale blue and gray brown sit lightly on the ivory ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
