The large star medallion of this charming rug holds a central rosette. Worked on a cream field, a large star medallion holds a central rosette in pale blue and gray brown. Small diamond pendants sit above and below the center, while scattered sprays fill the open ground. Pale blue corner forms curve in with graceful curling vines that frame the central design. A handsome pale blue main border carries scrolling vines, edged by a narrow guard stripe of dark brown. The pile is low in places, and a light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Pale blue and soft brown stay gentle against the cream. At 4'6" by 8'5", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. The state-owned Sumerbank took over the Isparta carpet factory in 1943 and backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta, a weaving town among the lakes of southwestern Turkey, is known for Persian-influenced floral designs using a Turkish palette that favors cream and rose. Here the cream ground carries pale blue and gray brown drawing with a calm, orderly feel. The sprays and medallion rest lightly across the open field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
