Scrolling vines and small blossoms form an all-over repeat on this lovely rug. Worked on a cream field, scrolling vines and small blossoms in gray beige and brown form an all-over repeat with no central medallion. The drawing continues to the edges without corner spandrels. A gorgeous gray brown main border carries a dark brown scrolling pattern, framed by narrow guard stripes. The pile is low in places across the field, and bare foundation appears here and there. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The dense drawing holds the cream and brown steady against pale walls. At 4'11" by 8'6", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. The state-owned Sumerbank took over the Isparta carpet factory in 1943 and backed carpet making by hand there with new technology. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the cream field looks calm from a distance. This rug holds a soft cream ground and a fine floral scroll. The gray brown border frames the pale field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
