About this rug

Small rosettes with gray square cores and orange sides are strung down the center of this lovely rug. At the center, hooked figures in burgundy, red and olive stand on a brown field. No single medallion rules the field. Small rosettes with gray square cores and orange sides are strung down the center between pairs of stepped, hooked shapes. The handsome border pairs a red band of small leaf shapes in green and rust with a gray brown band of red hooks. Fine cream lines set the bands apart. The pile is low in places, with pale specks of foundation showing. It suits a narrow passage, where the brown ground gives the red figures room. At 3'1" by 9'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Hamedan has had many names: Hangmatana or Agbatana to the Medes, and Ecbatana to the Greeks. It is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long format, with its stepped figures set in a single column down the length instead of gathered at a center. The brown ground lets the red and olive stand out.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
