Rows of stepped gul motifs in a strict grid cover this amazing rug. Over a terracotta field, rows of gorgeous stepped gul motifs repeat in a strict grid. Each octagonal figure holds a deep red center with small green accents, framed by jagged white and dark brown outlines. The pattern runs edge to edge without a central medallion. The main border is dark brown, carrying small geometric repeats in cream and rust. Narrow guard stripes with tiny diamond shapes border the field on all sides. The pile is full and even over the whole surface. It anchors a small space, letting the warm earth tones ground the room. At 3'3" by 4'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
For a wedding Turkmen women wove tasseled trappings for the camel that carried the bride from her father’s tent to that of her new husband. Among the Turkmen special carpets are woven for the birth of a child, for weddings, and for prayer and mourning. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. The drawing never changes, so the interest sits in the color. This piece keeps that consistent layout across its whole surface. The terracotta ground provides a warm base for the red and white figures.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
