The cream star medallion of this delightful rug holds a slate blue core. At the center, a cream star medallion with a slate blue core sits on a deep red field crowded with charming scrolling vines and flower heads. Large slate blue shapes anchor the top and bottom of the field, holding pretty gold and green blossoms. The main border is cream, carrying a vine of small rosettes in red, green and blue. Narrow dark red stripes edge the border on both sides. The pile is full over the face and in the borders. It grounds a small space, and the cream medallion lifts the dense red drawing. At 1'11" by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. This accent rug keeps the classic layout of a central medallion and a floral field. The star at the center is worked in cream and blue against the red ground. A cream border frames the bright interior colors.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
