This amazing rug holds a single pictorial scene with a brown stag. At the center, a brown stag stands within a green scrolling frame on a deep red field scattered with small blossoms and white birds. The field holds a single pictorial scene and no central medallion. A splendid cream main border carries multicolor rosettes and leaves, framed by navy guard stripes set with ochre diamonds. The pile is full across the face and borders. It holds a warm focal point in a small space, balancing the bold red with the cool navy frame. At 2' by 2'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Shiraz rugs
Shiraz was the capital of Persia from 1760 to 1779, in the reign of Karim Khan. The Qashqai tribal confederacy was formed in the late 18th century, during or just after the rule of Karim Khan Zand in Shiraz. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and the rugs sold under its name came from the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and small stylized animals and birds appear in the field. This rug places a stylized animal in the field. The deep red ground and the navy frame create a strong contrast around the central figure.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
