A cream core sits inside the star medallion on this wonderful rug. The deep red ground carries a central star medallion with a cream core, ringed by navy rosettes and green leaves. Handsome navy spandrels fill the four corners with stepped vines and small blossoms. The main border runs burgundy with a repeating geometric motif in cream and rust. Every part of the pile reads full, from the rosettes out to the border bands. It holds a bright note of color in a small space without taking over. At 1'8" by 3'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Ecbatana, the ancient city beneath Hamedan, fell to Cyrus the Great in 550 BCE and to Alexander the Great in 330 BCE. Avicenna, the physician and philosopher, died in Hamedan in 1037, and his tomb there was rebuilt in the 1950s as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. Here the star medallion and the red ground sit close together in a compact format. A small floor space suits it, where a larger piece would crowd the room.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
