A stepped star medallion stands at the center of this remarkable rug. At the center, a stepped star medallion in teal, camel and navy sits on a deep red field with small pendants above and below. Beautiful blue spandrels fill the four corners, holding cream scrolls and small red shapes. A handsome steel blue border carries small rosettes in red, cream and green. Narrow stripes in brown and pink line the band on either side. Full pile covers the face and borders. Teal and blue brighten the red when this rug sits in a small space. At 2' by 2'11", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the 5th century BCE the Greek historian Herodotus described Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, as ringed by seven concentric walls. Many village rugs from around Hamedan went to market through Mosul several generations ago, which is why they were called Mosul rugs. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. On this rug, a red ground and blue border form a clear frame, with bright teal and camel in the central medallion.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
