About this rug

Small diamond rosettes on slender stems sit between the rows of hooked figures on this charming rug. Rows of hooked figures cross a burgundy field so dark it reads almost brown, each outlined in red and orange around rose, blue and green centers. Small diamond rosettes on slender stems sit between the rows, and no medallion interrupts the pattern, which carries the full length of the runner. An orange guard stripe with dark leaf-shaped dashes separates the field from the gorgeous navy main border. That border holds lovely four-petal flower heads in rose, green, red and cream, all around the piece. A burgundy outer band with a green zigzag closes the edge. It brings a strong line of navy and orange to a pale hall floor, while the dark field keeps that color calm. At 3'7" by 8'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Hamedan is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long, narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. Here the format is used as intended, with hooked figures repeating row after row and no medallion in the way. The bright flower heads in the border give the dark field a lively frame on both sides.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
