The red field of this amazing rug holds a strict grid of elongated gul motifs. The red field holds a strict grid of elongated gul motifs in cream, rust and near-black. Small cross motifs in cream and rust sit between the rows of emblems. A splendid deep red border carries small cream and rust diamonds and dots, edged by a narrow near-black band. The pile is full across the face and in the border. Warm red and bright cream accents make this piece easy to place in a small space. At 3'3" by 1'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Turkmen storage bag, hung from the trellis walls of the tent, held the family’s belongings and worked something like a portable wardrobe. Turkmen women wove the furnishings of the tent: carpets for floors and entryways, and smaller pieces made into bags and animal trappings. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that rigid arrangement of cream and rust guls against the red background, and the cream stays vivid beside the near-black outlines.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
