A star medallion with a small diamond core makes this a remarkable rug. Worked on a cream field, dainty scrolling vines in deep red and steel blue carry rows of small blossoms and leaves. A central star medallion sits at the middle, its core a small diamond in wine red and navy surrounded by brown petals. The drawing runs to the field edges. A handsome dark blue main border holds pink and ochre flower heads on branching stems. A narrow crimson red stripe edges this frame. Full pile covers the whole rug, borders too. It brings a bright floral note to simple floors. At 1'10" by 4', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Kerman rugs
Marco Polo, by Walter Hawley’s account of 1913, wrote of the beautiful shawls and carpets made by the women of Kerman. The Wagner garden carpet of the Burrell Collection, made in Kerman under the Safavid dynasty, is the earliest garden carpet outside Asia. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. This piece keeps the pale cream ground, with curving vines across it. The deep red and dark blue give it more color than that palette suggests.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
