About this rug

The central medallion of this lovely rug forms a notched diamond in near-black and red. Delicate scrolling vines, palmettes and flower heads in steel blue, gold and cream crowd the deep red field. A central medallion forms a notched diamond in near-black and red, with short extensions reaching up and down. Near-black spandrels fill the four corners with graceful curling leaves that echo the center. A sand border runs a repeating band of blossoms and leaves in blue and rust. The pile is low in places. The dense drawing holds the red, blue and gold together in one warm pattern. At 3'7" by 5'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mashhad rugs

In 1877 the Qajar shah gave London’s South Kensington Museum 14 carpets chosen by his ministers to represent the best being woven, one of them made in Mashhad. The Textile Museum in Washington counts Mashhad among the Khorasan cities cited as sources of fine carpets. Mashhad is the great weaving city of Khorasan in northeastern Persia, and it specialized in large formats. Its rugs show deep madder red grounds, a single dominant medallion, and borders wide enough to hold their own at scale. This rug keeps that deep red ground and the single medallion at its center. The scrolling vine and palmette fill the field around the diamond core, and the sand border frames the red with a lighter line.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
