A central stepped medallion holds a dense floral core on this delightful rug. A rust field holds a compartment layout of dainty cream vines and navy rosettes. A splendid central stepped medallion holds a dense floral core, sending lobed arms into the surrounding panels. The main border is gray beige, carrying small red cross motifs and navy accents. Narrow guard stripes in navy and red frame the drawing on every side. The pile is full. The dense drawing brings order to the warm red ground, keeping the small format from feeling busy. At 1'8" by 2'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Nain rugs
In the second quarter of the 20th century carpet weaving was revived in Isfahan, and it expanded rapidly on exports made for the European market. By the middle of the 20th century Nain was producing carpets of the Isfahan kind in an extremely fine weave. Nain sits on the edge of the central desert, near Isfahan. Few Persian towns built their weaving reputation in the twentieth century rather than centuries earlier, and Nain is one of them. This rug keeps fine vine work within its paneled field. The rust ground gives the piece a warm cast, while the navy details stay sharp against the red.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
