About this rug

Rows of geometric diamonds and small flower heads make this a charming runner. Worked on a deep red field, rows of geometric diamonds and small flower heads repeat in black, cream and steel blue. A central column of diamond shapes runs the length, with no single medallion gathering the pattern. Stepped corners in pale pink and blue close the ends of the inner panel. The beautiful main border is deep red, set with linked rosettes in blue and cream, edged by a black sawtooth line. The pile is low in places, and white specks show where the weave has thinned. A warm red line stretches down a passage, where blue notes cool the dense drawing. At 3'1" by 6'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Zanjan rugs

The province of Zanjan holds Soltaniyeh, once the capital of the Mongol Ilkhanid dynasty, where the Mausoleum of Oljaytu was built between 1302 and 1312. Scholars have described the building as anticipating the Taj Mahal. Zanjan lies on the road between Tabriz and Hamedan in northwestern Persia, and its village weavers borrowed from both. The designs are geometric and the formats run long, so many Zanjan pieces are narrow and long. This rug keeps that geometric drawing and the long format, with the diamonds and stepped corners worked in hard lines. The deep red ground carries the whole length, broken only by small touches of steel blue and cream in the border and the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
