About this rug

A diamond medallion in pale green sits in the middle of this lovely rug. Cream covers the field, with soft sand cast in places and gray brown vines and small blossoms tracing a loose design around the center. A gorgeous diamond medallion rests in the middle, washed in pale green around a small floral core. Charming brown acanthus scrolls curl above and below it, and vine loops sweep in from the sides and frame the middle. A sage border holds small geometric motifs in dark brown, and a zigzag stripe edges it on the outside. The colors are soft from a light antique wash, and the drawing stays clear. The pile lies low and level across the face. In a corner, the soft green and brown notes rest against the pale ground. At 5'6" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece sets a shaped center among scrolling vines rather than hard geometry. The palette leans warm and faded, with soft green over cream. These pieces were made for houses, not for export, so the sizes are practical and the drawing is unfussy.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
