Faint vines and small rosettes show on the charcoal field of this lovely rug. Set within a charcoal field, faint outlines of vines and small rosettes appear as dark traces against the gray ground. Any larger design is barely visible, with only thin lines hinting at a central shape. The field runs to the edges without a visible border. An antique wash has taken every color to one tone, none at strength. The pile is low and even, with a pale patch in the lower center where the foundation shows through. The texture comes from shifting between smoke and deep gray rather than bright hues. At 5' by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Until 2008 the Isparta carpet factory was still working, a center of the craft for a wide region. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This piece keeps that orderly floral drawing, though the wash has taken the colors down to a single gray tone. Only faint traces of the pattern remain, leaving what looks like a solid ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
