About this rug

A lobed pale medallion holds a star rosette on this charming rug. The field shows plum burgundy, with the white foundation visible through the low pile. A handsome lobed pale medallion sits at the center, holding a star rosette and scrolling vines in rose and gray. A wide cream frame surrounds the plum field, filled with dainty garlands of rose, ivory and soft green flowers. A dark brown border carries a dense scatter of small cream dots and leaves. The pile is worn low across the plum field, and pale foundation shows in the open areas. Soft rose and sage notes stand out against the deep ground. At 5'10" by 9'4", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with the floral garlands arranged in clear symmetry around the center. Unlike the even surfaces often seen in Isparta rugs, heavy wear here exposes the weave beneath the softened colors.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
