About this rug

A turquoise star-shaped medallion sits within the charcoal field of this lovely rug. Set within a charcoal field with a brown cast, a gorgeous turquoise star-shaped medallion and scattered floral motifs emerge faintly from the dark ground. The medallion is a faded turquoise cluster, with smaller flower heads floating in the open space around it. There are no corner pieces, and the dark ground runs plain up to the border. A broad turquoise border carries a graceful scroll in darker teal and blue, edged by thin bands in charcoal and smoke gray. The pile is worn low across the face, and the weave shows through in the field. It grounds a sitting area, letting the bright turquoise border frame the dark center. At 5'6" by 8'10", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette runs softer and chalkier, favoring cream and rose over the deep madder of Persia. As town rugs rather than tribal ones, they keep an orderly drawing, and the field usually reads calm from across a room. This rug keeps the floral drawing in a central cluster. The heavy wear and the stark contrast between the dark field and the bright turquoise border give the piece a bold, graphic presence.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
