A round medallion with a teal green core sits among curling vines on this lovely rug. Over a tan field worn to pale streaks, pretty curling vines and small blossoms in green, teal and brown drift around a central medallion. The medallion is a round shape with a teal green core and scrolling tendrils that reach into the open field. Vine sprays with graceful green roses fill the corners in green and brown against the tan ground. The main border runs on cream, carrying rosettes and small flowers in green and brown, with a bright green band along its inner edge. The colors are eased by a wash, and wear shows across the field. The tan lets the green notes breathe. At 5'7" by 9'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Since 1997 its hand-woven carpets have carried a protected geographical mark. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. This piece holds that blend in a round medallion and scrolling vines in a practical size. The tan field and muted greens sit close together in tone.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
