About this rug

A lobed diamond medallion with scrolling pendants sits on the tan panel of this lovely rug. Over a tan field shaped into a panel with notched corners, gray brown vines and cream blossoms form a large central design. The medallion is a lobed diamond with a dark geometric core and scrolling pendants at the top and bottom. Dark floral scrolls sit at the four corners of the panel. The main border runs on a pale gray beige ground, carrying a chain of graceful rosettes and palmettes in gray brown and muted pink. Narrow bands with small geometric marks run along its edges. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. It sits in a room with warm wood, the soft pink-tan keeping the mood restrained. At 6'1" by 9'3", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Metropolitan Museum of Art notes that the workshops of Gordes, a Manisa town, were particularly active in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Manisa lies inland from the Aegean coast, and its weaving sits between two traditions. You find the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops in the same rug. This piece keeps that mix, with a stepped outline in the center and curling vines in the frame. The palette is warm and faded, with no color left at full strength.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
