Sprays of pale blue and teal flowers on ochre make this a charming rug. Sprays of pale blue and teal flowers cover the ochre field, gathered around a faded center. Gorgeous cream spandrels with scrolling leaves close the four corners of the field. The main border is blue, carrying angular motifs in teal and tan, flanked by narrow guard stripes in cream and tan with a teal zigzag. The pile is low across much of the field, and the foundation shows in the paler streaks. It grounds a sitting area, and the blue border cools the warm ochre center. At 6'5" by 10'4", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Manisa rugs
For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Manisa sits inland from the Aegean coast, and its weavers worked between two traditions. A single rug can hold the geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops. This piece keeps that mix in its angular border motifs and the scrolling leaves at the corners of the field. The tan field and blue border keep the whole rug looking plain and unfussy.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
