About this rug

A round scalloped medallion outlined in gray blue sits at the center of this charming rug. On a tan field, a light antique wash has softened the colors without reaching the drawing. A round scalloped medallion sits at the center, outlined in gray blue, with cream blossoms around a small round core. Graceful sprays of cream blossoms and gray blue leaves fill the four corners, and delicate trailing vines run down both long sides. There is no main border band; the sprays and vines frame the open ground. The pile is low across much of the field, with pale patches where the foundation shows. Gray blue notes cool the warm tan ground. At 6'6" by 9'7", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, entrepreneurs of Isparta backed the founding of the Isparta Yarn Factory. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This piece holds that structured layout, placing the central motif and corner sprays clearly against the open ground. The gray blue and cream details stay light on the tan field, keeping the whole rug light.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
