About this rug

A diamond lattice of teal leaves repeats across this wonderful rug. Gold tan covers the field, which holds a beautiful diamond lattice of teal leaves and small dark crosses with pale pink centers. The pattern repeats across the face as an all-over design, with no central medallion to break the grid. The lattice runs straight to the edge on every side, with no border and no corner pieces. The pile is low across the field, with pale worn streaks where the foundation shows through. The cool teal balances the warm tan across this geometric ground so the pattern does not feel heavy. At 5'5" by 9', it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

In the first half of 1911 the busiest agent of the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers was in Isparta, where a single agency had about 25,294 square meters woven in homes. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to read calm from across a room. This piece has the structured layout and composed look of a city workshop, with the lattice set in a strict grid. Rather than curling vines in a floral scroll, this rug uses a geometric repeat of leaves.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
