About this rug

A diamond medallion of scrolling arabesques sits on the salmon tan field of this lovely rug. A turquoise and green diamond medallion of charming scrolling arabesques with leafy pendants sits at the center of a salmon tan field. Bunches of dainty turquoise flowers and green leaves spread into the corners of the field. A wide cream border carries a chain of turquoise rosettes and curling green vines, edged by narrow bands in tan and gray brown. Pile runs low in spots across the field, and the bare weave shows through in a few patches. The colors are eased by a light wash, and the drawing stays clear. The cool turquoise offsets the warm tan across the surface. At 5'9" by 8'7", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

For about seven years, until he became sultan in 1520, Manisa was governed by a young prince, the future Suleiman the Magnificent. In Demirci, a district of Manisa, almost every household has been known to keep a carpet loom. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. This piece holds that blend in a stepped outline to the central diamond and a loose floral scroll in the border. The palette is warm and faded, in salmon, cream and turquoise.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
