A lobed medallion with a small rosette core makes this a charming rug. Beige covers the whole field, washed to a single warm level where faint tan and gray beige outlines mark the drawing. A splendid lobed medallion sits at the center with a small rosette core and short pendants reaching up and down. Large vine spandrels anchor each corner. Around the field runs a gray beige border with a tan scroll of palmettes and leaves. A pair of slim guard stripes runs along the border. The full antique wash brought every color to one warmth, none left at strength. Wear shows as low pile here and there, with the foundation visible in pale patches. The tan and gray beige stay soft against the beige ground. At 5'5" by 9'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Since 1850 carpet weaving in Isparta has passed through many stages, and it was the Oriental Carpet Company that first carried its carpets overseas. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, a town known for floral designs with Persian roots, worked in a Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, so the drawing is orderly and the field looks even from a distance. This rug keeps that orderly drawing, with a central medallion and corner spandrels laid out clearly. The wash has taken the colors to one warm beige, leaving the floral lines as a faint trace.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
