An all-over lattice of curling vines covers this charming rug. Set within a light gray field, an all-over lattice of curling vines and small rosettes in gray brown covers the face. No central medallion breaks the pattern, which repeats as a continuous scroll. The main border is warm gray, carrying a row of cream flower heads and brown leaves. A narrow dark brown stripe runs along the inside of the border. No color is left at strength: a full antique wash has taken the rug to one warm level. The pile is low in spots, and the bare weave shows in the lighter patches. At 5'5" by 8'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. In southwestern Turkey’s lake country, Isparta workshops spent the twentieth century weaving floral designs of Persian origin in a chalkier, softer palette. Town work like this tends to look orderly and calm. The rug sits within that tradition, gray brown on a pale ground. The scroll fills the field evenly from edge to edge.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
