Faint charcoal outlines of floral sprays and curling vines fill this charming rug. Across a cream field, faint charcoal outlines trace scattered floral sprays and curling vines. A beautiful central medallion appears as a delicate lobed shape, worked in thin charcoal lines against the pale ground. Large scrolling vine loops fill the corners, merging softly into the surrounding space. The main border is tan, carrying a continuous scroll of leaves and blossoms in gray brown. Thin charcoal lines frame the field on each side. A full antique wash has left no color at strength. Pale worn patches show the foundation in a few places. The tan and cream tones suit a sitting area. At 6'5" by 9'9", it fits a living room with the front legs of the sofa and chairs on the rug, or beside a queen bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
The Isparta Yarn Factory was founded in 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, with the support of Isparta entrepreneurs. The Isparta carpet factory, a center of the craft for a wide region, kept working until 2008. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs rather than tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly and the field usually reads calm from across a room. Here the central medallion and corner vines sit faintly against the pale ground. The tan border gives the piece an airy, open feel.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
