A notched medallion holds a diamond grid on this lovely rug. At the center, a splendid notched medallion holds a diamond grid and a central rosette inside a cream reserve, on a muted pink field. Small pendants extend from the top and bottom of the reserve. Lattice-filled spandrels in gray beige sit at the four corners. A cream border runs around it, filled with charming curling stems and blue flower heads. A narrow brown stripe edges it on both sides. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. It suits a corner, where the pink and steel blue notes stay gentle. At 3'9" by 6'10", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
An Ottoman report of 1917 notes that carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them. The Isparta Yarn Factory was founded in 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, with the support of Isparta entrepreneurs. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, not tribal ones, so the drawing is orderly. This rug places the lattice work and vine scrolls clearly against the pink ground. The steel blue details remain subdued beside the cream.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
