A lobed star medallion with a cream center holds the middle of this lovely rug. Set within a muted pink field, scattered charming sprays of cream and pale green blossoms drift around a central figure. A lobed star medallion holds a cream center and blue petals, with short tips at top and bottom. Small floral sprays fill the four corners and echo the middle. A splendid gray beige border carries a scroll of pink and blue vines. A few patches have worn low over the face. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. The muted pink ground and blue accents keep the overall look airy. At 4'6" by 8'2", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Carpet weaving gave work to poor families in Isparta, Burdur and places like them, an Ottoman report of 1917 notes. Until 2008 the Isparta carpet factory was still working, a center of the craft for a wide region. The workshops of Isparta, in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, spent the twentieth century weaving floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. Cream and rose are common in that work. This rug shows that mix, with a pink field and blue notes in the medallion. The drawing stays orderly, with a clear center set against the open ground.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
