About this rug

The muted pink panel of this charming rug holds a cream oval medallion. Muted pink carries the central panel, scattered with cream vines and small sage leaves around a central shape. A beautiful scalloped cream oval medallion rests in the center, holding a floral core and short pendants at its upper and lower ends. A sage green band with delicate floral sprays rings the panel and curves into the four corners. The outer border is dark brown, with cream rosettes and small pale dots around the perimeter. A pale vertical crease runs down the field. Pile runs low in spots, and the foundation shows across the pink. The soft rose and green tones stay together gently. At 5'3" by 8'9", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The story goes that the Yamut, a tribe of Seljuk Oghuz Turks who settled around Isparta, developed carpet weaving there, and that their rugs were known as “yamut” rugs. An Ottoman report of 1917 records that merchants knew the most successful Turkish version of the Persian Tabriz carpet as “Isparta quality,” after the place where it was made. Isparta sits in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, and its workshops spent the twentieth century weaving Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. That palette is softer and chalkier, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug keeps that orderly drawing and the calm field, with the cream medallion set clearly against the pink ground. The colors stay in muted pink and sage rather than the brighter tones often seen in the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
