A diamond grid of vines repeats on this charming rug. Across a muted pink field, a handsome all-over lattice of dark vines holds small blue and teal blossoms. There is no central medallion, only the repeating diamond grid that covers the whole ground. The main border is cream, carrying a scroll of blue rosettes and teal leaves, with narrow bands in charcoal and pale blue inside it. The colors are eased by a light wash, and the pile is worn across the center, where the pink reads paler. Soft rose and cool blue notes share one surface. At 5'9" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Isparta rugs
Isparta was one of only five places where the Oriental Carpet Manufacturers, the big carpet exporter of the day, had workshops of its own in 1909. In the first half of 1911 its Isparta workshop wove more carpet than any of the others, about 12,318 square meters. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops through the twentieth century wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. This rug has the calm field of the type, with the vine lattice laid over a soft pink ground. The blue accents are brighter than the washed rose, a clear note within the soft Turkish range.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
