About this rug

This charming rug holds an ivory oval medallion with a green floral spray. Set within a muted pink field, vines and rosettes in green, brown and gold fill the open space around the center. An ivory oval medallion holds a green floral spray, ringed by a dark brown wreath of leaves that sets it off from the pink ground. Splendid ivory spandrels, each with a green blossom, sit on dark brown in the four corners. The main border runs dark brown with lovely ivory roses and green leaves, edged by narrow pink guard stripes with small green marks. The pile is low in places across the field, and the white foundation shows through in spots. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pink and brown tones keep a gentle presence together. At 5'10" by 9'3", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Isparta rugs

The Isparta Yarn Factory was founded in 1924, in the first years of the Turkish Republic, with the support of Isparta entrepreneurs. The Isparta carpet factory, a center of the craft for a wide region, kept working until 2008. Isparta lies in the lake country of southwestern Turkey, where workshops wove Persian-influenced floral designs in a distinctly Turkish palette. The palette is chalkier and softer, with more cream and rose than the deep madder of Persia. These are town rugs, so the drawing is orderly and the field tends to look even from a distance. This rug shows that orderly floral layout, with an ivory medallion and four corner pieces around a pink field. Green leaves pick out the vines, and the dark brown border carries ivory roses.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
