About this rug

An oval medallion with a star at its core holds the center of this lovely rug. Worked on an ivory field, fine gray brown vines and blossoms form an oval medallion with a star at the core, and pendants reach up and down the field. Pretty gray brown scrolls curve into the four corners. A splendid gray beige border holds small geometric motifs in gray brown, with slim guard stripes on either side. A light antique wash softened the colors and left the line work crisp. Pile wears low here and there across the field. The gray brown line work rests gently against the pale ground. At 5'4" by 8'11", it fits a bedroom beside the bed, a study under a desk, or a small sitting area.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Manisa rugs

Suleiman the Magnificent sent his own son, Prince Selim, to govern Manisa in 1544, a posting that had come to mark a prince as a candidate for the throne. The carpets of Kula, in Manisa province, first appear in the 17th century, and the town made its best pieces in the 18th and 19th centuries. Inland from the Aegean coast, Manisa weaves between two traditions. The geometric medallions of Anatolian village work and the softer floral borders of the western workshops often meet in the same rug. Made for houses rather than for export, Manisa pieces come in practical sizes, and the drawing stays unfussy. This rug keeps that meeting, with an oval medallion of loose floral vines on an ivory ground, the gray brown drawing clear against it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
